On Saturday we hosted one of the biggest Empowerment Summit in our college . ( MOUNT MARY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION). We gathered under the theme, “Unlocking Potential: Empowering Women, Involving Men.”
A college is more than just a place to earn a degree, it is a laboratory for social change. It is where the leaders of tomorrow are forged. If we graduate students who are brilliant in courses, but illiterate in the language of gender equity, then we have failed in our mission of holistic education.
To “Unlock Potential” means we must acknowledge that brilliance has no gender. When a female student is sidelined, or when her path is obstructed by systemic bias, the entire academic community loses a perspective that could have sparked the next great scientific breakthrough or social revolution.
Our young men in the hall, did not only serve as guests of the movement, they were stakeholders in it. The new world requires collaborative leadership.
Involving men in our college setting means,
Championing female peers in group projects and research.
Challenging toxic locker-room culture that devalues women.
Recognizing that our own growth is amplified, not diminished, by the success of our female colleagues.
To our invited dignitaries, their presence bridged the gap between the classroom and the boardroom. We students need to see that the world we are about to enter is ready for us and that we are actively working to ensure that “merit” is the only metric that matters. Their mentorship yesterday provided the blueprints for the careers we will be building tomorrow.
This empowerment served as an opportunity for our students to ask the uncomfortable questions that will Break the barriers. We are the generation that can finally move past the “battle of the sexes” and into the “partnership of the sexes.”
The session was not just another lecture to attend, but a mandate to live by.
As the First Female SRC President of Mount Mary College of Education, it was a dream come true having organised this great summit with my team . This is the world that I have always been dreaming of , and it was manifested in the comments and actions of students during and after the program. I believe this empowerment summit will go a long way to change the lives and gender perspectives of many students, opening their eyes to the bigger world .
